The Funeral

Zhenya was standing in her parents room. Burton Cottage hadn't been lived in for some time, but it was still theirs. For some reason they hadn't sold it. She looked up at the reflection in the mirror on her mother's dressing table. It was awful. Zhenya's eyes were swollen from the tears, and even today, on the day of her funeral, she couldn't keep the tears away.

It had been the worst time of her life. Thankfully Gary had been able to take the twins from Hogwarts and bring them to the Hospital quickly. It was only five days after the accident that their father was recovered enough to sit in a wheelchair. They were all able to spend some time by their mother's bedside, saying goodbye and supporting each other before they turned off the life support.

And now, it was time to bury her. Zhenya lifted the lid of her jewellery box, hearing the familiar creaking noise as it opened. She pulled out some familiar bangles, rings, and necklaces. There was one black pearl necklace she recognised. It had been her grandmother's, given to her my her husband. Zhenya put that necklace on, feeling it fitting to wear to the funeral. There were other items in here, things that would perhaps look nice on Ava and Alana.

She sat down on the chair and stared at the pearls around her neck, thinking about her mother, and grandparents.

Black suit, black button-down shirt, and polished black leather shoes. As a person who spent most of his entire work time at the outside, He rarely dressed up neatly with a suit unless for formal occasion. And for the record, he rarely attended formal events like weddings or gala or anything that he had to wear a suit for the dress-code. He’s not a big fan of those kind events and mostly he seemed avoid being there.

But he couldn’t avoid for today. It’s his fiancée’s mother funeral, or maybe he should refer her as his soon-to-be mother-in-law. Gary had to come not because he had to, also not because of Zhenya or her family. He was coming because he respected Lisabel so much, she was like a mother that he’d never had. The blonde guy couldn’t believe that she’s gone already. It’s very hard for him and the others to accept that, especially for his fiancée since she and her mother just started to talk again. Also this happened a month before their wedding which was make it… worse.

He walked downstairs and noticed that their families were there; Alex, Dimitri, his wife and his son, Teddy and Ava, Sophia and her husband, the other cousins, Raven whom just arrived yesterday, even his uncle and aunt came from Vancouver. But he hadn’t seen his fiancée there, maybe she’s still upstairs dressed up. He back to the upstairs with two glasses of wine and looking for her. Entering the main bedroom, he found Zhenya was sitting there. Gary just stood in front of the door, somehow he didn’t want to disturb her from her… thinking, silence, grief, or whatever the term was.

Teddy didn't know how to express his grief. Gary had come and taken them from school, and he was made to say goodbye to his comatose mother. He didn't even get a last hug from her. He was sitting at the kitchen bench with a mug of hot chocolate in front of him, Sophia was next to him with her arm around him. This was his childhood home, up until they had moved in with Dima and Alana. He held his drink between his hands to warm them. There was a coldness creeping inside him, even though it felt warm in the heated kitchen. He couldn't distract himself from the pain, nor could he figure out a way to express it. It just sat there, inside.

After a few moments, Zhenya blinked and the tears gathering in her eyes fell down her cheeks. She reached for a tissue, and glimpsed a shadow in the doorway. It was Gary. She swallowed and stood, walking to him and leaning her head into his chest. She knew she didn't really have to be strong for Gary, Dima, Alana, Sophia and James, but she did for the little ones; Teddy, Ava and Keenan. It wasn't fair for them to deal with her grief as well as their own. "How is everyone?" she asked.

The moment when Zhenya called her about Lisabel, Raven already felt pessimistic that she would gonna survive the accident. As the surgical intern, she knew that most MVC victims, especially at the driver seat, would likely to die at the OR table or ended up brain dead if the head trauma was too bad for the victims’ brain. After dealing and contemplating with her resident, the brunette girl finally could attend to the funeral. She arrived last night so Zhenya still didn’t know that she was here. It’s not a surprise, but she just hadn’t told her best friend since it’s kinda a last minute thing though.

It’s kinda weird to be the only one who wasn’t a family related to the Burtons. She had met some of them of course; Sophia and her husband, and then Dima and his little family, and of course Zhenya’s father who was still in recovery from the accident. Raven hadn’t ever met the younger Burton twins before but now she currently sat with Ava, the girl one. Occasionally Raven and her made a small talk and every time Ava mentioned her mother, the younger girl started sobbing again.

How is everyone?

Everyone was sad, devastated, and most of them couldn’t imagine that Lisabel could die very soon like this. So he wouldn’t be lie; everybody was NOT okay. The teenage twins still didn’t believe that their mother died, and Dima tried to be tough even he was so devastated. “They are waiting for you downstairs.” Then he handed a glass of wine to his fiancée. “And your best friend just came last night, so did my uncle and aunt.” At some point, Gary thought that Raven could help her facing this hard time but he didn’t force the best friend since he knew how busy a muggle surgeon was; she volunteered to come. And his family? He didn’t expect that they would be here when he owled them.

Zhenya nodded.

She picked out two pieces of jewellery, one for Ava and one for Alana, and took the wine from Gary, sipping it. It was good wine.

She took Gary's hand and walked down the stairs. So Raven was here, as well as Gary's family? "That was nice of them," Zhenya said numbly. She knew she appreciated them coming, it was really nice of them, but she couldn't quite comprehend it. Not just yet.

Zhenya walked up to Raven and Ava.

"Thanks for coming Raven, but can I just borrow my sister for a moment? I won't be long. Come with me Ava," she said gently. She would give Raven a huge hug soon, and probably tell her all about the past week. The hell week. But right now, she just needed to show her sister the jewellery.

Once they were in the next room, Zhenya held out the two necklaces. One was a large ruby heart that their mother wore quite often, on a silver chain, and the other was another pearl necklace. This one was white. Their mother just loved pearls. "These were some of mum's favourite pieces of jewellery, and I think she'd want you to have something. I think the ruby would probably go with you best. It suits your lion heart. But it's up to you. Something she loved to hold close to you."

When the owl came to her dorm at that night, Ava didn’t expect that it’s gonna deliver bad news for her and Teddy. It’s the worst night that ever happened to her. She even had to argue with Gryffindor prefects and Flamsteed when she tried to call her twin brother out from Ravenclaw common room. She didn’t care if the Professors are gonna take points or give her detention, thankfully that they both understood the circumstance and let her see him. Even her sister’s fiancée picked them up at that night to see their mother for the last time. She really didn’t expect that her mother would die very soon like this. The last time the brunette Gryffindor got the owl from her mother, she said that her sister was gonna get married and she was appointed to be one of the bridesmaids, just that.

Sitting next to her sister’s best friend, she didn’t talk much like she used to. She was too sad for a small talk, sometimes she couldn’t help with the tears every time she remembered her mother. Raven was very nice though, she hugged her whenever she started sobbing and calmed her down. Zhenny was so lucky to have a friend like her, she was very nice. Ava then saw her sister came toward her and she said that she wanted to talk about something. “Excuse me, Raven.” She said and then walked following her sister to a room.

“What’s wrong?” She asked in her hoarse voice. Gosh, she cried too much lately. Then she noticed that her sister handed her a ruby heart necklace. Hey, she recognized that; it was her mother’s favorite one. Why she gave it to her? “Are you… really want to give this to me?” Because 1. She’s still too young for jewelry like this and 2. She’s not a girl who loved jewelry. But this was her mother’s and now her mother died unexpectedly. So… she took the ruby hesitantly. It’s so beautiful though.

Zhenya hated hearing her younger siblings so devastated, but it was understandable, and Zhenya felt the same. Perhaps not quite so bad, but she had the guilt and regret eating away at her. She had spent a lot of time with her father. Being estranged from them for so long had left her feeling terrible. She wanted to make up for it, at least to her father.

Zhenya wiped a few silent tears from her face and sniffed, trying to compose herself. She didn't want to audibly sob in front of her younger sister, and a few moments later she felt okay to speak. "Yes. Yes, absolutely. My colour is emerald. You're the ruby." Zhenya unclasped the necklace and fastened it around Ava's neck. Of course she knew her sister wasn't much for jewellery, but it looked like it belonged there. Zhenya smiled, but her eyebrows creased, and her lower lip clenched as fresh tears spilled from her eyes. She let out a breath and wiped those ones away, too. "I know you don't wear much jewellery, but this was... it was always yours, Avvie. And even if you don't want to wear it, it's something you can always keep with you, somewhere, as a piece of mum."

She looked at the other white pearl necklace and said "I'd like to give this to Alana. What do you think? If you don't want me to, I won't." She felt like her mother would have wanted Alana to have something, a piece of her, for all she had done for Dima, as well as for Lisabel and Alexander during the past few years. But... sometimes jewellery was a funny thing with deaths. Zhenya was happy with her black pearl necklace, passed down from the Metanova women, and Ava was always supposed to have the ruby. Perhaps the other Burton woman should have a piece too.

She didn't really understand what her sister just said. Maybe because she cried too much lately and it made her brain shut down for a while. Maybe she meant that since she's a Gryffindor by heart and Ruby is the stone for Gryffindor so it's gonna suit her. It's not that she didn't want that jewelry, it was very valuable thing and what if she couldn't keep it safe? Like Zhenya had said, it was a piece of their mother's. Ava then let her sister's put it the necklace on her. "It's so beautiful." She murmured. This necklace fit perfectly with her black dress. The brunette girl remembered how their mother always asked her to dress up a little bit girly with the dresses and skirts and any kind of girl's stuffs, but in the end she always picked her tees and jeans. And now she put on the dress for their mother's funeral. She leaned forward and hugged her sister tight.

"I don't mind if you give it to Alana." She gave an opinion. There was no particular reason why Ava disagreed about giving that pearl necklace to her. She had been a part of their family, their mother loved her too. Alana's engagement ring was their mother's though, she gave it to her. Then she heard somebody knocked the door, it was Dima and he said that they needed to go now. "Come on, sister. Time to say goodbye to our mom." As the older sister, Ava knew that Zhenya had to be strong for her and Teddy. But sometimes she didn't need to be, it was okay to cry in front of them. It means that she also loved and missed their dearly beloved mother.

Zhenya was glad she didn't mind giving it to Alana. She decided she would do it just before they left. And then Ava gave her a tight hug, and Zhenya returned the hug with a big squeeze.

Yes... it was time to say goodbye. The thought gave a dreaded fluttering feeling to Zhenya and she felt sick. In fact, she had been so stressed with everything that she was sick. She'd hardly been able to keep anything down, but she was hoping once the funeral was done, she could have a week off. Go away somewhere with Gary. The hospital had given her a few weeks off as family leave. Thank Merlin. She would not be able to deal with sick, possibly dying people, when she was going through this grief.

"You go on, I'll be two seconds," Zhenya said, giving Ava a squeeze on her shoulder.

She walked through the house to where everyone was and motioned for Alana to follow her to the corner. "Dima, I'll be one second. Seriously." She would.

With Alana and her in the corner, Zhenya pulled the pearls out. "Alana I want you to have this. It was one of mum's and I think you should have it." It was something their father had bought her when he found out she was pregnant with Dima, she had told Zhenya many years ago. It seemed... perfect that Alana should have it.

It was a beautiful funeral, somehow it reminded her of Avery’s funeral a few years ago. At that time, Raven thought that his death was such a good thing since he’s suffering too much from his illness. But was Lisabel’s death a good thing too? It wasn’t a good thing, she got an accident and was brain dead, and the worst thing was it happened just a month before Zhenya’s wedding. It was unexpected and… cruel.

Speaking of, where was Zhenya? The brunette girl didn’t really have a chance to talk with her, just a couple of seconds when she actually wanted to have a serious talk with Ava. Also she didn’t want to bother her at the funeral session. She had to go back to Boston tomorrow morning since she only got a couple days off and it’s just not right leaving her without saying something or whatever. After looking around and asked Dima, the twins, Sophia, and of course the fiancee; Raven found her sitting alone on a swing at the backyard. What the hell was she doing there? She couldn't see exactly because she's not wearing her glasses or contact lenses either. Then she walked toward and sat beside her.

She didn't really know what to say even she had been through worse but this one was different. Her best friend just lost her mother when she's trying to get closer again after being estranged for years. "I'm really sorry for your lost." She said. "How's your father, by the way?"

The swing was gently rocking forwards and backwards. Zhenya felt numb after the funeral. There was nothing left. No planning, not last goodbye... nothing. It made her jump slightly when she heard Raven, who seemed to suddenly apparate by her side. She'd just been concentrating on her thoughts so deeply.

She knew her family were there for her, and could relate to her, having just lost their mother too. But she had to try and be strong for their father and the twins. Gary knew what it was like to lose parents, but she just had no idea how to really express herself. Raven, she realised, had suffered loss too. A different kind of loss. She loved her mother, but Raven had loved Avery differently. They could have had a future, and that was ripped from them.

She just shrugged at Raven's words. What could she say? It wasn't okay. It wasn't Raven's fault. Zhenya understood it was just something people said when someone died though. SHE had said it herself. Zhenya sighed. Her father had spoken at the funeral, had read part of her obituary. Her sisters had come down from Russia to be there, and Jezabel had spoken the earlier part of the obituary. Had had been pretty composed through the funeral, but she could tell by the occasional shakes in his voice that he was trying really hard to hold it together. "He's alive. I'm not sure he thinks that's a good thing though." He was so different. Of course he had just lost his wife, but he was swallowed with the guilt and kept saying it should have been him. They had all told him he was wrong, it wasn't his fault, he hadn't even been driving! But he was full of guilt, and Zhenya could understand why. If the situation had been she and Gary, she would blame herself too.

"Thanks for coming down. Was it easy to get time off?" she asked, knowing how busy her schedule could get.

Was it easy to get time off? Honestly, it's not. But she didn't want to tell her how difficult for her to get the time off, not to mention with the intern exams coming up in a few weeks. But she had her trick, passing her 80-hour work time per week in a few days back "It doesn't matter though." Raven said. Because if she told Zhenya the truth, her best friend might said you shouldn't be here stuff. It's not that she's a queen of crappy life or something like that, but she had faced many horrible things in her life, even she's just 25 years old. So her experience said that she needed a person to hold her though.. maybe it wasn't her job anymore since Zhenya already had Gary in her life.

Okay, it's not that Raven was in love with her best friend and kinda jealous with the fiancee.

"It's gonna be hard for him." She said about her dad, being guilty and blamed himself for everything happened. It wasn't his fault though, it was nobody's fault either. It's just happened. "You know that there are five stages of grief; Denial, Angry, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. So it's normal if he kept blaming himself for everything happened." Now she talked like a psychiatrist. "He needs you, he needs his family to pass the stages. Well, you need each other because I'm.. not really recommending you guys to be in a grief group. It's not gonna be easy for that, it's a long shot. But you guys have to be patient." Exhaled.

"Just... don't do something that you're gonna regret for the rest of your life like..." She suddenly remembered her dark times and nobody knew about that except Milla and her shrink.

Zhenya smiled sadly at Raven. It seemed obvious that it had been difficult for her to get time off, which made the effort to come that bit more appreciated. Zhenya reached out and grabbed Raven's hand, giving it a quick squeeze and letting go again.

She nodded. Of course it would be hard for him. Merlin forbid anything happen to her Gerald, but if it had... she wouldn't know how to go on. That was exactly what her father was probably thinking. It broke Zhenya's heart. Zhenya knew about the grief, knew her father had been through at least a few of those stages, and back to them. Not only forwards was grief. Zhenya just had no idea what to say. The numb feeling was constant, and she was in a space of darkness. She was listening to what Raven was saying, taking it in, understanding it but she didn't know how to process it and respond. So, she stood up and pulled Raven up too. She gave her a hug, "Thanks for coming, even though I just said it. I really appreciate you being here. Sorry I'm just... I don't know what to say or think or feel. I don't think anything, feel anything..." she paused, looking back towards the funeral home where the afternoon tea was being served. "Shall we get a drink of firewhisky and toast to my mother?" she asked, a small hint of a smile on her face.

Zhenya didn't need to thank her million times. She smiled and patted her best friend's back. "Anytime. If there's something happen, don't you ever doubt to contact me." Even they lived separately across the universe, it didn't matter. Raven would help her or at least try to help her.

Because that's what friends are for, right?

A firewhiskey? Seriously? She slightly raised a brow. "I don't really recommend alcohol for grieving people." The brunette refused. "It could lead you to depression, and usually when people depressed they could do something stupid like... being violent or.. wanting to commit suicide." Gulp. Why she had to mention that? "But well... if you want to grab a firewhiskey, it's fine. That's uh... That's up to you. But I think a cup of warm hot coffee is enough for me." Yeah, she'd better take some caffeine to make her functioned very well.

Zhenya felt very reassured by Raven's friendship. Though, really, even the living in different countries thing wasn't a big issue. They had so many ways of contacting each other. She spoke less with people living in the same suburb as her!

And then they were walking up to the funeral home and Raven got all medical, which brought a chuckle to Zhenya. "I should have known you'd respond like this," she said, giving a smile to Raven. "It's a bit of a tradition in the Burton clan, toast the deceased with a shot of firewhisky. Don'y worry, it's just one. THEN we will get onto the warm drinks." She remembered back to her grandparent's funeral, when her mother brought her over a small shot of the fiery liquid. Her smile faltered as she realised that now it was her mother's turn.

Good, now she's bringing the medical talk again. Sometimes she couldn't help with that since herself was a surgeon so.... Sorry not sorry. Well, just one shot of firewhiskey seemed not that bad. "Okay then." The brunette agreed. One shot wasn't that bad, and hopefully it wouldn't continue to another shot. She followed Zhenya back to the funeral home and ready for the firewhiskey shot.
